Mike Pettine On Winning Vs. Developing Players
This video features former Cleveland Browns Head Coach Mike Pettine and Cleveland Manager Terry Francona at PCA-Cleveland's inaugural Breakfast With The Coaches event in May 2014. FOX Sports Ohio's Matt Underwood led the discussion.
Asked about balancing sportsmanship and a drive to win, Pettine talks about how challenging that can be in youth sports. He says it all comes down to the priority of your program. Is it to win or to develop players? It can be hard to strike a balance between the two, but ultimately you want the kids to have a good experience.
In some cases that may mean having a rule in place that every kid gets a chance to play as long as they are in good standing with the team. This ensures that they'll get the experience of competing, regardless of their individual level of talent.
