How Athletes Can Overcome 5 Common Mental Pitfalls
"Think positive” is a cliche in sports, much easier said than done. The words “think positive” alone aren’t strong enough to avoid these five common mental or emotional pitfalls, which, once recognized, may be overcome:
1) The Game Hasn’t Even Begun, But You Think You’re Going to Lose.
2) When Something Goes Wrong, You Blow Up.
3) You Feel Burned Out.
4) You Don’t Feel Like You’re Getting Anywhere.
5) You Choke Under Pressure.
Key to overcoming those thoughts is a focus on what is controllable rather than what isn’t. For example, athletes can learn to enjoy the unpredictability of sport, rather than reacting negatively when competition does not go as hoped.
