Advice For New Soccer Referees

PCA is proud to share this resource from our National Partner, US Youth Soccer (@USYouthSoccer). One of the biggest problems facing youth sports today is the treatment of referees and the ability of leagues and clubs to find enough people willing to ref games.

While PCA is working hard with coaches, athletes and parents on how to interact effectively and respectfully with officials and referees, it's also important to provide resources and best practices for those just entering the world of refereeing as well.

One way to help ensure that kids have fun in youth sports is for organizations to create and Honor the Game culture. Referees, as well as coaches and parents, have a role to play in the development and defense of that culture. This resource from US Youth Soccer gives new referees (or experienced refs just wishing to improve their performance), ideas on the following areas:

  • Making a Good First Impression
  • Pre-Game Responsibilities
  • During The Game
  • How Do Referees Improve?
  • Recertification Resources
